One of the biggest mistakes people make when trying to lose weight is mess up their breakfast. As Dublin Personal Trainers, we see it with pretty much every new member. They do one of two things: they either eat absolutely nothing, or they eat the wrong foods.
Tackling problem number one – just don’t do it. Simples. You’ll slow your metabolism, meaning you’ll burn less calories while at rest (bit of a hinderance if weight loss is your long term goal!), and you’ll more than likely end up so hungry by lunch time that you’ll scoff every Danish pastry in sight.
The second problem is just down to misinformation. We’ve heard countless individuals recite tales of their healthy breakfasts – overnight oats, cornflakes, smoothies packed with bananas, muesli with almond milk…Are these foods healthy? In and of themselves, sure they are. They are full of micronutrients and are of course fine as part of a balanced diet. However, if your goal is weight loss, you can do better for breakfast. So, what are the right foods?
Typically, if you want to lose fat, the absolute best thing you can do is have a protein filled, high fat breakfast. Not only will this keep your blood sugars stable (and thus less likely to get cravings), it’ll also keep you full for hours. Plus there’s the added benefit of protein – if you’re not getting adequate protein in your diet, your body will breakdown muscle cells before fat cells. So while the scales might be going down, you might just be losing muscle tissue – disaster.
I’m sure you’re sitting there wondering what the hell you should be eating for breakfast, so below are a few fantastic ideas for breakfasts if weight loss is your goal:
- Eggs and Bacon
- Eggs and Avocado
- Greek Yogurt and Berries
- Bulletproof Coffee and a protein shake
- Protein pancakes with Greek yogurt
